mirte 2My internship in Indonesia; a fear that I overcame. Living in a different culture and slowly but surely getting sucked into it a little more, the food, the weather, the people, driving around on the scooter, the gili's and above all of course all the lovely children at the school: they made this internship to a success. Back in the Netherlands I still think about the best 3 months of my entire physiotherapy training every day. Hopefully I see Indonesia and its people again soon.

During my physiotherapy training I was given the opportunity to do an internship abroad. Something I secretly dreamed of for a while, but which I found scary at the same time. So I was not entirely sure of this possibility at first. Soon I decided to embark on this adventure with a slight fear, together with a classmate I would go back to Indonesia for 3 months. The team from Destination Indonesia prepared us well for what awaited us, although of course some things could not be explained in words. We would do our internship in one of the 9 hospitals in Mataram. A hospital where the poor branch of the population can go for treatment.

We have seen many impressive things here and can somewhat help with some treatments. Unfortunately, there was not always much to do in the physiotherapy hospital, so we decided to focus on places where our help seemed more needed. A school with handicapped children, we would spend a large part of our time there. We treated children with various conditions including CP and down syndrome. Although we did not have much experience with this branch of the professional field, it encouraged us to use our creativity, something that was successful and where both the children and we had a lot of fun.
